Assignment 7 - Diversity In Intelligence
What really stood out for me this week was the young boy with his uncle. It totally amazed me that he associated the alphabet with animals, I would have never thought of that!
When I was in grade school we had two children that were in my grade that both had Down's Syndrome, although they were in most of my classes I did not have a lot of direct contact with them. They would always be shipped of to the Special Education classroom. I always thought that they should have been allowed to stay in their regular classroom, and that it would have benefitted them greatly to spend more time there.

I have never taken a test to see if I was gifted, but I do think that I had the potential to be extremely bring in grade school and secondary. I think that because I was a free spirit, school was more difficult for me, especially subjects that were forced onto us without our interest.
I was an average student, I didn't fail anything until grade 12 (calculus - who can pass that anyway)? I always found the curriculum constricting and we were never allowed to fully express our opinions. I have learned to work around that now, and realize how intelligent I actually am; instead of an institution teling me I am average.

My view on intelligence has changed slightly. I think that people who do poorly on IQ tests are not necessarily 'dumb.' But, I also think that they could be less knowledgeable in regards to what the IQ test is asking of them. anyone can learn anything as long as they put their minds to it. Sometimes material is in front of you and it doesn't make sense until days, weeks, months or even years (in my case) later. That person may just not be ready to learn!
I think that everyone has the potential to be intelligent, no matter your upbringing, education or disabilities. Finding good support, learning how to learn and being open to what you are learning are all important factors when it comes to different people learning different things.
Assignment 8 - Intelligence Across The Lifespan
I was unable to upload my Prezi because it went over the MB limit, but here is a link to it:

One thing that stands out for me this lesson is that their brain develops well into your 20's. I think that if I had known this before I would have taken my time when it came to post-secondary school. I would have also not been so hard on myself to make 'adults' decisions and function in a 'normal' way.
The biggest challenge I faced while completing this assignment was balancing my time. Many college students are feeling the pressure and I am no exception. Between studying for what felt like a million tests and preparing group presentation it was next to impossible to actually sit down and complete this assignment. Another challenge I faced was trying to figure out how to upload or paste my Prezi into my Weebly blog. Needless to say, I wasn't able to exactly figure it and tried my best!

I learned that I am persistent and extremely driven. If this had been 10 years ago I would have dropped the class because the pressure would have been too much for me to handle. I knew that I could complete everything even though my daughter was sick, my parents were out of town and I had 2 group presentations along with 3 final assignments!
Assignment 9 - Technology & Intelligence
1. Is the internet helping the development of our crystalized intelligence (knowledge base) or harming our crystallized intelligence (don't pay attention to things, we think we can just Google)?
I think that the internet is in fact helping the development of our crystalized intelligence. Usually when someone is interested in something that will use to Google to further their knowledge about that topic. This can be viewed as harmful because it can be pulled up at anytime. BUT, when something is Googled out of sheer interest, the facts that are ingested have a higher chance of being remembered. When someone is genuinely interested about something they will remember what they have looked up.

2. How can we use technology in school without it becoming a distraction (everyone is on Facebook instead of working)?
A good way to use technology in schools is to overuse it. When I went to private high school each student had their own laptop. Because we took notes on it, did lessons on it and basically did everything on it, I kind of lost interest. It was a nice break when we didn't have to be typing or watching a video. Another way is to incorporate the problems into the curriculum. I don't know what teacher's rules are but why can't a teacher create a Facebook group for the class? Each student can be added into the group and discussions can take place and questions can be answered constantly. The distraction becomes part of the class and suddenly it's not so distracting anymore!

3. How could we use social media, or other technologies, in the college classroom to enhance the development of student's social and emotional intelligence?
Like I said above, Facebook could be made a part of the class to encourage discussions and asking questions for those who are not as outgoing as others. This will also boost the social intelligence of those who are already outgoing because they will have the opportunity to keep in touch and express feelings about the material that is being learned.
In regards to emotional intelligence, I think that by using technologies such as email and messaging, it can encourage students to interpret tone. Interpreting tone in an email is important because it is assessing the emotion behind the message. Emotional intelligence is about learning to manage your emotions and be sensitive to others as well.

This week I learnt that I have a Fear of Missing Out. I wake up, brush my teeth and check Facebook at the same time! I don't know why this can't wait but it has become such a habit I don't even think about it anymore. I will definitely be more conscious and try not to do that anymore!
I also learned that I learn better with technology. Even though it can be extremely distracting and can hinder the completion of assignments and studying. Technology has become so ingrained in my life that the distractions are not longer distractions. I can literally switch on and off my mood in front of a computer. This has come after many years of struggling with technology being distracting, but I have it down pat now!
Also, technology has helped me so much this semester! Between extra videos for Physiology class and looking up articles for Wellness, I think I have been able to utilize many corners of the internet this semester.
