Assignment 4 Part 1
Multiple Intelligences & Learning Styles
After taking the Multiple Intelligences quiz I have a better understanding of how I use my brain and why certain things are harder for me than others. My strongest intelligence was Verbal or Linguistic, and my second strongest was Visual or Spatial.
My Multiple Intelligence
My Learning Style
My strongest Learning Style was Verbal. I prefer to learn things by talking about it or by someone talking me through the material I am to learn. I also learn well by having conversations and reading instructions.
I really enjoyed taking these questionnaires and I agree with the results of them. I believe that I was already familiar with my intelligence and learning styles. It was a great idea to have us take these quizzes and questionnaires! I found it a great help in my other subjects for studying for some midterms and working on assignments. I was able to manipulate the material into ways that worked for my learning style. I was also able to get together a group of students to have study group where we talked about the material and had conversations about it. It was great when it came to test time because I was able to recall our "conversation."
I think these types of tests would help a lot of students who are coming from elementary school to high school. and Again from high school to elementary school. I think it is important to let teens know of these ideas so that they are not discouraged when it comes to adapting to a new situation (high school or college) and learning new material.

Assignment 4 Part 2
Since I have a high Verbal or Linguistic MI most of my study habits will have to do with writing or talking. The main study strategy I found online at learning-styles-online.com that would help me is:
To use mnemonics. Acronym mnemonics use words, focusing on the first letter of the word to make up another word or memorable sequence. This has helped me recently in a Physiology test, as well as in my Introduction to Wellness midterm.

The main technology tip I was able to find in a variety of different websites and books was:
To record lectures to be able to listen to them over again. I have yet to try this, but I can definitely see how it would help me. I would be able to freely listen to the lecture without having to race my hand across the page to take notes. After class I could revisit the lecture on the recorder and make appropriate notes from there. This is also a great way to review information on a regular basis!

Assignment 5 Part 1
Academic Intelligence
Metacognition - Task Variable - I chose this because I am not great at determining how long something will take me to complete. I almost always estimate too short a time and end up feeling rushed or like I did not complete my task to my best ability. This includes assignments, trying new recipes, and laundry! I plan to develop this skill first, by giving myself a lot of time and keeping track of how long I actually do take. This way I don't feel rushed or incapable. I will time myself and make sure to keep track and keep in mind for the next time. I think this is an important school not only for academics but beyond as well. Being able to manage time is important in a career and at home!
Internal Locus of Control - When I took the locus of control quiz my results were low, meaning that I did not have a high locus of control. I did not believe this to be true, but after reassessing the decisions I make, my task variables and things that are actually truly out of my control I have decided that I can improve this. My first step was an unconscious one. I decided to go back to school for something that I was actually interested in and that could provide me with a career that I would enjoy. I can only move up from here! I think that academic intelligence is important for this because I would like to bridge to UOIT after I complete my program and I need to achieve high marks as the admission process is extremely competitive. I need to be able to organize my time, complete high quality assignments and network myself to make good connections for job opportunities later on.
Assignment 5 Part 2
What Good Students Do In Class
Because I have high Linguistic Intelligence I will review material after class and before next class, and adapt my note taking for classes that I know are more difficult for me.
By reviewing my notes I will be able to remember more of what we did the week before and continue with the new lecture as thought it were a conversation. I will also start review my notes with a partner and talking about what we learned. This way I can use the conversations we have as a reference point for the next lecture.
I plan to adapt my notes for harder classes. For Physiology class I will take notes on the PowerPoint slides and print them in colour. After I review them, I will then use different colours to highlight important information. I can also record the lecture and then go over the slides after class while listening to the recording.

I decided to focus on reviewing notes because of the Forgetting Curve. If I can minimize the forgetting curve my academic intelligence should improve significantly. I can review material before bath time with my daughter or just after dinner.
I decided to focus on adapting my notes based on the BDA (Before, During After) Method of note taking. Although I won't be using a blank page I can still take notes on one side of the slide, leave space for revision on the other and sum up each lecture at the end of the slides. |
I really enjoyed this assignment as it allowed me to further develop my studying and learning skills. I am extremely motivated to achieve high marks in this program as I am getting a bit older and would like to be able to provide for my daughter and take some pressure off of my husband.
What Good Students Do Outside Of Class
I chose to focus on Time Management and Overlearning for my outside of class study habits.
I chose Time Management, because in Assignment 4 I focused on Task Variables. I think that Time Management builds upon that and being a busy mom I could use better time management in different aspects of my life. First of I, I have scheduled my daughter's daycare to allow me a little bit more time to myself. |

Don't think I'm selfish, I hate leaving her, but this way I get two hours on Mondays and three hours on Thursdays of time at school before any classes start. I plan to use this time mostly for revision on my general education class. Since my general education class (Intelligence!) is online, this time will be crucial to getting the assignments done and lectures reviewed. This class uses many things that are good for my dominant verbal intelligence, such as videos, and Glogsters so the only thing I will modify is my note taking. Instead of taking notes on the computer I will hand write them after watching or listening to the information for a first time. I have also purchased a four month white board for the remainder of this semester and for the next one! I will be writing all my assignments and test on this board in different coloured markers.
I chose Overlearning because I have a class that has a cumulative exam at the end of this semester. This class is also the hardest class in our program and carries over into next semester building upon material learned this semester. I find the material from the text book very dray and hard to read because of the scientific language. The teacher does an amazing job teaching the material, but it is a very difficult. I plan to join the SALS tutorial group on Mondays. This will help me because it is a group of five students and they engage in conversations about the material as well as have it taught from a different perspective. If I am unable to join the SALS group, I have a back-up plan. There are two other students who have expressed interest in getting together on our breaks to review the material together. This would be great as well. This is a great site explaining the meaning of overlearning.
I think that this assignment was great for learning about our academic intelligence and will definitely give us a leg up on those who have not explored this material before. Knowing my dominant intelligence (Linguistic), my learning style (Verbal) and my personality (ESFJ), will help me not only in college, but hopefully in university and throughout my life after I have completed my formal education.
Assignment 6 Part 1
Creative Intelligence
Why is it important to develop creativity? Being a first-time mom I decided to look at creativity in children. My daughter is 20 months old on November 6th. She learns leaps and bounds everyday, it is incredible to watch.
Her well-being and development is so important to me! This course has helped me so much in understanding intelligence and reassuring me that I have nothing to worry about :) My little boo-boo is here on the left squinting in the sun :D

Creativity can promote emotional development. Creative expression can provide many opportunities for expressing emotions and working through those emotions to gain an understanding of them. You can always help them associate emotion to creating by asking them how they felt when they created it or how they feel now that their project is done.
Painting is done by an artist named Julie Gilbert Pollard from Phoenix AZ. I found it on an art website that sells independent artist's paintings from the US and Canada.

Creativity can also promote social development! In children, creativity is a social act. Singing, dancing and theatre can teach children to pay attention to each other as well as learn how to observe and follow social 'rules.'
This picture to the left is an example of creative social play.

Creativity supports physical development. When I first sent my daughter to day care I was shocked at the amount of arts and crafts came home. I was also shocked at how well her fine motor skills were developing. All that painting, gluing and shaking sparkles were a huge part of her motor skill development.
The picture to the right is an example of fine motor skill development. It is also an activity that my daughter enjoys.

Creativity can support language and literacy development. When children are engaged in new things it gives them an opportunity to hear new words, sounds and to try these new words and sounds out themselves.
The picture to the left is a book by Erika Hoff describing language development at each stage of life.

Creativity can promote cognitive development. My daughter has a full imagination. She uses wash cloths as hats and paper plates as strollers for her toys. Creative activities can help children come up with new ideas and to think outside of the box. My daughter has a playpen full of toys, but loves using everyday items and making up her own rules! I don't have a personal picture but the sock to the right represents how my daughter plays with an everyday item. She puts socks on her hands and become Captain Sock-Hands. She can chase, catch and tickle anyone when she is the Captain :)
What really stands out for me are the barriers to creativity. I can admit that I have been a victim of my functional fixedness. It is not until recently that I began to look at things differently or outside of the box. I can definitely credit my daughter for that! I can also admit that I am a barrier to creativity sometimes. I have tried to be more conscious of it, but I am guilty of criticism, especially when it comes to my husband.
Assignment 6 Part 2
I believe that creativity can its own type of intelligence because you can be creative but not very intelligent. You can also be intelligent but not very creative. I believe that when creativity and intelligence are married within a person, that person is most intelligent.
When it comes to wisdom, I believe that intelligence is a subset of wisdom. You can't have wisdom without intelligence; but you can have intelligence without wisdom.
When it comes to wisdom, I believe that intelligence is a subset of wisdom. You can't have wisdom without intelligence; but you can have intelligence without wisdom.
Wisdom and creativity together, is a person's ability to perceive a problem or issue, to work through that issue in a mature way and to put their own unique touch of resolving a problem or issue. If a person has intelligence but lacks wisdom and creativity, that person may take longer to perceive the problem, or it may take them longer to work through the issue. Their solution will most likely not have a unique touch.
I think this happened because wisdom and creativity cannot be measured. When something is able to be measured it becomes more accessible to the general population. Because wisdom and creativity are subjective and can range throughout different areas, they are harder to measure. If creativity only encompassed painting with primary colours may be measurable. Or if wisdom only included one or two life experiences, it may also be measured.

Looking at creativity and wisdom I have realized that my wisdom could definitely be worked on. I find that I am unable to reflect on situations and learn form them. I actually have to experience something before I learn from it. Confucius explained three ways to gain wisdom: "First, by reflection, which is noblest; second by imitation, which is easiest; and third by experience, which is the bitterest."
Gaining wisdom is very popular in many different culture. It is a prized "possession' and is comprised of life learning, analysis and thoughtful action.
Gaining wisdom is very popular in many different culture. It is a prized "possession' and is comprised of life learning, analysis and thoughtful action.
As a student it is important to have all three: intelligence, creativity and wisdom. You need intelligence to be able to learn the material, creativity in order to solve problems and wisdom to be able to analyze and learn from each and every experience (even if it is a 'small' one).
That being said, I don't believe that all three need to work at the same to or the same level. Only a small amount of creativity is needed at some times, while large amount of wisdom may be needed at other times. Intelligence should be at a certain level because intelligence can be measured. Curriculum and assignments will be based on learning and course outcomes and these outcomes will measure a certain level of intelligence, meaning average intelligence should be achieve to maintain above average marks.
